Answer:

-21

Explanation:

The way I would approach this problem is by adding an imaginary 3 to your 97, that way you can work with the number 100. ( don't worry we will take that 3 back off by the end of the problem we are just trying to make it simpler to solve the problem) So that would make the equation : 100+(-118)+0= ?

-118+100= -18

-18 + 0 = -18 but remember we added +3 to our 97 to make an even 100 to work with which makes it easier. So now we have to take that imaginary +3 back out of the equation so we will do this:

our answer to the top -18 -3 = -21.

But now to solve without adding any imaginary numbers to make it easier to solve possibly in our head.

+97+(-118)+0= (I used the + in front of the 97 because even though it doesn't show it in our equation we know it is a positive 97 also +97) this makes it easier to rearrange the equation to make it easier to solve. so -118 + 1 = -117 +1 = -116 + 1 = -115 ect. ect. We would have to do this a total of 97 times going 1 at a time. eventually it would get closer and closer towards 0. It can be really confusing working with negative numbers because even though a negative number is getting "smaller" example -115,-114,-113,-112,-111,-110.... This is actually getting bigger in terms of value. I hope that makes sense and I didn't confuse you anymore. So then,

-118+97= -21

-21 + 0 = -21

answer would be -21

Best of luck to you. I hope I really didn't confuse you, my intentions we to help you see how negatives work when getting positive numbers added to them.
