How would you respond to Jamila's claim that 10 is both even and odd because it's divisible by 2 and 5?

Answer:

"Any number that can be exactly divided by 2 is an even number."

Explanation:

I would tell Jamila to look up what it means for a number to be odd.

"A number which is not divisible by “2” is called an odd number."

The corollary is:

"Any number that can be exactly divided by 2 is an even number."

Period, end of discussion.

But then I might ask her what 5 has to do with it? Does she think that because 5 is odd and it divides into 10 then 10 must be odd also? That's silly, because plenty of odd numbers divide into even numbers (3 into 6, 7 into 14, etc.)
