Answer: 16 quarters and 14 dimes

Explanation:

Set up the equations

Let d represent dimes

let q represent quarters

0.1d + 0.25q = 5.4

d = q - 2

Solve the system:

10d + 25q = 540

simplify: 2d + 5q = 108, and d = q - 2

2(q -2) + 5q = 108

2q - 4 + 5q = 108

7q = 112

q = 112/7 = 16

q = 16 quarters

d = 16 - 2 = 14 dimes

Therefore: 14 dimes and 16 quarters
