Write 8 7/10 + 3 9/10 as a mixed number in the simplest form

Explanation:

This one's simple because the denominators are the same. Let's leave the whole numbers out of it for a minute (the 8 and the 3) and just concentrate on adding the fractions:

7/10 + 9/10

Remember that when you add fractions that have the same denominator, you just add the numerators, but keep the same denominator. So it looks like this:

  • 7 + 9
  • 10

Or (7+9)/10. I just think it's easier to see with the horizontal fraction bar.

So that's just: 16/10, which of course simplifies to 8/5, but that's improper, so change it to 1 3/5.

Make sense? Now add back in the whole numbers:

8 + 3 + 1 3/5 = 12 3/5
