At the surface Scott Russell Sanders’ The Inheritance of Tools is a nostalgic recollection of the day his father died. However in viewing his inherited tools as a symbol, we see that Sanders is revealing more about himself than simply what happened on the day of his father’s death. Through Sanders’ symbolic use of tools we see that he struggles, in the wake of his father’s death, to continue the tradition of his ancestors while still being his own person.
