The onset of the Cold War transformed Japan’s position from a defeated and occupied nation to a major global power. In the years following World War II, Japan underwent a rapid and sweeping transformation, rebuilding its economy and infrastructure. The country embarked on a program of rapid economic growth, known as the “Japanese economic miracle,” which propelled it to become one of the world’s wealthiest and most developed nations by the early 21st century. During the postwar election in Japan, women were able to participate in the electoral process for the first time. The Liberal Party of Japan emerged as the most popular. It was during this time that the SHIDEHARA Cabinet began working on constitutional reform. GHQ’s draft guidelines for a new Constitution were followed by a Government proposal for a new Constitution. The Japanese Constitution was established on November 3, 1946, following the signing of the treaty.
