Recently, Mr. Pilates was given a raise for his outstanding work and now makes $145 per class.
a) Determine the number of dollars of Mr. Pilates raise.
b) Determine the percent of Mr. Pilates raise. (Round to the nearest tenth of a percent.)

The number of dollars is just how much more money he makes per class, right? 145 - 110 = 35

Or do it like this:

110 + x = 145

Where x is the number of dollars more that he makes. Solve for x:

x = 145 - 110 Which is just the math we did above.

Percentage is always dividing something by something. We want to know what fraction, or percent, $35 is of the $110 he used to make. So divide 35 by 110:

35/110 = 0.318

But that's not a percentage yet, is it? Percent literally means "per century", and a century is 100, so we multiply the decimal number by 100 to get the percentage:

0.318 x 100 = 31.8%

That's how much more he makes per class that he teaches. Do you see that that's roughly one-third more?
