I don't understand the 1st answer, so I'll have a go.

If you've written it correctly, wouldn't you just add everything up? The parentheses are irrelevant the way it's written:

(6x + 1) + (6x + 5) = 180 becomes:

6x + 1 + 6x + 5 = 180 Combine like terms:

12x + 6 = 180

12x = 174

x = 14.5

But since it doesn't come out to be a whole number, maybe you've written the question wrong? Could it be:

(6x + 1)(6x + 5) = 180


36x^(2) + 36x + 6 = 180


36x^(2) + 36x - 174 = 0

Then you could apply the quadratic formula.

You'd get x = 1.75 or - 2.75.

Those are weird numbers, so I suspect your question isn't really the product of those two expressions.
