Answer:

x = - 4 , y = - 2

Explanation:

given the 2 equations

4x - 9y - 2 = 0 → (1)

12x - 5y + 38 = 0 → (2)

multiplying (1) by - 3 and adding the result to (2) will eliminate x

- 12x + 27y + 6 = 0 → (3)

add (2) and (3) term by term to eliminate x

(12x - 12x) + (- 5y + 27y) + (38 + 6) = 0 + 0

0 + 22y + 44 = 0 ( subtract 44 from both sides )

22y = - 44 ( divide both sides by 22 )

y = - 2

substitute y = - 2 into either of the 2 original equations and solve for x

substituting into (1)

4x - 9(- 2) - 2 = 0

4x + 18 - 2 = 0

4x + 16 = 0 ( subtract 16 from both sides )

4x = - 16 ( divide both sides by - 4 )

x = - 4

solution is x = - 4 , y = - 2
