I think you're asking for the LEAST common denominator, which is usually what they ask for, so just ask yourself:

What is the SMALLEST number that 16 and 12 BOTH go into evenly?

Start with the multiples of the bigger number, which in this case is 16:

16

32

48

64

etc.

Do you see what I mean? "1" sixteen is 16. "2" sixteens is 32, etc.

Now decide if 12 goes into any of those evenly?

Does 12 go into 16 evenly? No.

How about 32? No.

How about 48? Yes, 12 goes into 48 three times.

So 48 is the LEAST common denominator.

(If you went out a couple more 16's you'd find that 96 is another COMMON denominator, but it's not the LEAST common denominator.
