What part of copyright law allows you to sell a used book, CD, or DVD as you wish? Why do you think this does not create a copyright breach?

The First-sale doctrine is a part of US Copyright law that protects the rights of the owner to sell a used book, CD, or DVD as they wish without worrying about any repercussions from the maker of the product. It essentially limits the control of the maker once the good is sold for the first time.
