The population of a town increased by 8% in the first year. The next year, it decreased by 12% and became 11286. What was the population of the town at the beginning of the first year?

Answer:

increase 8% = 1+(8/100) = 1.08

decrease 12% = 1-(12/100)=0.88

overall coefficient of evolution: 1.08*0.88=0.9504

population at the start of the 1st year: 11286*0.9504=10726.2144 = 10726 inhabitants
