Kelly wants to fence in a rectangular space in her yard, 9 meters by 7.5 meters. The salesperson at the supply store recommends that she put up posts every 1.5 meters. The posts cost $20 each. Kelly will also need to buy wire mesh to string between the posts. The wire mesh is sold by the meter from large rolls and costs $5 per meter. A gate to fit in one of the spaces between posts costs $85. Five staples are required to attach the wire mesh to each post. Staples come in boxes of 1000, and each box costs $16. How much will the materials cost before sales tax?

Answer:

$698.50

Explanation:

22 posts × $20/post = $440

1 gate × $85/gate = $85

21 pieces of 1.5-m mesh × $5/m = 31.5 m × $5/m = $157.5

1 box of staples × $16/box = $16

(There are 22 posts. Each post uses 5 staples). 5 × 22 = 110. 1 box of staples has 1000 staple, so 1 box is enough.)

$440 + $85 + 157.5 + $16 = $698.50
