The fish started dying because the fish ate all the plants. Plants normally absorb all the nitrites in the water and once the plants were gone on 9/4 there was nothing to absorb the nitrites. On 9/16 the nitrite levels increased to 5 and that’s when the nitrite became nitrate.
B) The fish started dying because the temperature in the tank was too high. Since the tank was too hot, the fish were not able to maintain homeostasis. Fish cool themselves off by swimming around. When they were observed, they were swimming.
C) The fish started dying because the ammonia was too high. Fish waste is turned into ammonia. The ammonia is turned into nitrite and then nitrate. On 9/2 the ammonia started increasing because of the plants and those same plants absorbed all the nitrates in the water. Once the plants were gone on 9/4, the nitrates increased in concentration.
When nitrate concentration levels became too high, the fish started dying.
D) The fish started dying because the tank could not maintain a stable pH. Freshwater fish prefer to live in an aquatic environment that has a neutral pH of 7.8. The pH constant fluctuations caused the fish to stop maintaining homeostasis. Once the fish could no longer maintain homeostasis, they started dying.
