let n = unknown number

p = 2n/3 equation1

p - n = 10 equation2

substitute equation1 to equation2

2n/3 - n = 10

(2n - 3n)/3 = 10

-n/3 = 10

-n = 30

n = -30

substitute n = -30 to equation2

p - n = 10

p -(-30) = 10

p + 30 = 10

p = 10 - 30

p = -20
