The meaning of the book The Outsides is that people are not all that different. Looking at life as an outsider and feeling as though one is being treated as an outsider is a matter of perspective or point of view. The moral lesson is the true value of friendship and gang loyalty, staying true to oneself, and closing the gap between the rich (Socs) and poor (greasers).
