Answer:

a) -1.611

b) 0.513

Explanation:

For function f(x), the average rate of change from point (a, f(a)) to (b, f(b)) is:

average rate of change = [f(b) - f(a)]/(b - a)

Look at function f(x).

For x = 2.2, f(x) = f(2.2) = 2.9 (read the y value off the graph)

For x = 4, f(x) = f(4) = 0 (read the y-value off the graph)

average rate of change = [f(b) - f(a)]/(b - a) =

= (0 - 2.9)/(4 - 2.2)

= -2.9/1.8

= -1.611

Look at function g(x).

For x = 2.2, g(x) = f(2.2) = 2.9 (read the y value off the graph)

For x = 6.1, f(x) = f(6.1) = 4.9 (read the y-value off the graph)

average rate of change = [f(b) - f(a)]/(b - a) =

= (4.9 - 2.9)/(6.1 - 2.2)

= 2/3.9

= 0.513
