Answer: 13.72 mm²

Explanation:

First you can find the area of the shape, then you can subtract the circles from the middle.

The total area before subtracting the circles is 20 :

Using the given height (5) and width (8), and the triangle area formula


(1)/(2) (5)(8) = 20

The area of the circles is 6.28 :

All you need is radius to find the area of a circle,
\pi r^(2) , and for both circles the radius is 1.

Interestingly, the area of a 1 wide circle is just pi (cuz
\pi (1^(2) ) is pi)

Add the two circles together, then subtract them from the total area:


20 - \pi - \pi = 13.72

and units because area,

13.72 mm²
