In the story, the main character Sir Gawain is a knight who accepted the challenge of the mysterious Green Knight in order to honor their king and nation. He cut off the Green Knight's head and as he promised he went to the Green chapel after a year and a day to receive a blow in return. Sir Gawain fits the ideal character of a medieval romance who is an honorable knight who takes a challenge in order to honor his king and nation. All throughout the story, Sir Gawain's character exhibits this characteristic by deciding to fulfill his promise to the Green Knight and at the same time by refusing the advances of Bertilak's wife.
