Answer:

Ajax of Salamis was a mythological Greek warrior who fought in the Trojan War. He was known for his great strength and bravery. During the battle, he competed with the Greek general Odysseus for the coveted armor of the fallen warrior Achilles. Ajax managed to retrieve the body while Odysseus fought of the Trojans. After the war, a contest was held to determine who would receive the armor, and Odysseus won with the help of the war goddess Athena. Distraught by this result, he decided to end his own life.

Note

As with most ancient history and mythology, there is certain debate as to why Ajax actually killed himself. Some further sources to look at are:

  • Sophocles' play Ajax
  • the epic the Lost Iliad
