If we can write the equation into the form y = mx+b, then it is linear. For choice (a), the equation 7x = 9-y can be turned into y = -7x+9. This shows choice (a) is linear.

The other answer choices are not linear. We cannot turn those equations into y = mx+b form. Notice the 7xy term. The fact x and y are together like that is the biggest clue we cannot write it into y = mx+b form. If we try to isolate y, then we end up with y = (2x-9)/(7x). This graphs out a nonlinear curve.

Choice (b) also plots out a nonlinear curve. Use a tool like Desmos or GeoGebra to see the plot. Choice (d) is also a nonlinear curve.

If we multiply every term in choice (d) with the LCD x, then we get 6-7xy = 2x which looks somewhat similar to the form in choice (b).
