Mechanical waves travel through a medium (a matter/material) to make waves, thus allowing you to replace mechanical with the medium it goes through. (It’s also called Matter wave too, for example.)

Mechanical waves are not typically referred to as "material waves." Instead, they are called mechanical waves because they require a medium, or material, to travel through. These waves transfer energy by causing particles in the medium to vibrate and pass energy from one particle to the next. Examples of mechanical waves include sound waves and seismic waves. The term "material waves" might be a less common or specific way to refer to mechanical waves.
