Kurt Wenner creates illusionistic 3-D chalk drawings on sidewalks. One piece of pavement art depicts a person perched atop a pillar. Another piece shows a winding trail that seems to plunge into the Grand Canyon. The art gives viewers the feeling that they can walk right into the scenes. Wenner is an American-born artist who was more interested in the ceilings of 17th-century Europe than in modern art. Decades ago, Wenner traveled to Italy to study this art form. He was curious to learn how European masters made figures seem to float in ceiling paintings. Once he learned the technique, Wenner began practicing two-dimensional chalk art on the streets of Rome. Now, he has branched off into an art form of his very own.
