2x-4(x+3)=x-3 // distribute -4
2x-4x-12=x-3 // combine like terms
-2x-12=x-3 // add 2x to both sides
-12=3x-3 // add 3 to both sides
-9=3x // divide both sides by 3
-3=x

the answer is -3
