To find the total change in the stock market from the beginning of the day to the end of the day, you can calculate the net change by subtracting the decrease from the increase:

Increase at the beginning: 40 1/4 points
Decrease at the end: -90 1/2 points (since it's a decrease)

First, let's convert the fractions to a common denominator:

1/4 = 2/8
1/2 = 4/8

Now, calculate the net change:

40 2/8 - 90 4/8 = -50 2/8

Simplifying further:

-50 2/8 = -50 1/4

So, the total change in the stock market from the beginning of the day to the end of the day is a decrease of 50 1/4 points.
