- 4x = - 4 ( divide both sides by - 4 )

x = 1

substitute x = 1 into (2) and solve for y

2(1) + 3y = 17

2 + 3y = 17 ( subtract 2 from both sides )

3y = 15 ( divide both sides by 3 )

y = 5

solution is (1, 5 )
