The American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) was founded in the 1880s. Specifically, they met in New York on May 13, 1884, and established the organization. The first technical meeting of the AIEE was held during the International Electrical Exhibition of 1884, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Within a decade of its founding, AIEE had become the technical society for an established profession of considerable import, the electrical engineer. On January 1, 1963, the AIEE merged with the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) to form the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
