How did the growth of a plantation of economy impact society in the Southern colonies?

Because the economy of the South was mainly dependant on agriculture, cash crops were the main source of money and ran the economy. The want for free labor led to the establishment of slavery. This created a society that was divided along the class lines. The poor were very very poor and the rich were very very rich. This contrast meant it was a divided society, more so than in the North.
