Joe earned $32,400 last year. This year this salary increased

to $33,000. What percent of increase did he receive?
(Note: Subtract the old salary from the new salary to find the
increase. Percent of increase or decrease is based on the original
quantity.)

well, the increase was 33,000 - 32,400 = 600, so 600 bucks.

Now, if we take 32,400(origin amount) to be the 100%, what's 600 off of it in percentage?

\begin{array}{ccll} Amount&\%\\ \cline{1-2} 32400 & 100\\ 600& x \end{array} \implies \cfrac{32400}{600}~~=~~\cfrac{100}{x} \implies 54 ~~=~~ \cfrac{100}{x}\implies 54x=100 \\\\\\ x=\cfrac{100}{54}\implies x=\cfrac{50}{27}\implies x=1.\overline{851}
