let one number be n then the other number is 3n

then their product ( multiplication ) is 147 , that is

n × 3n = 147

3n² = 147 ( divide both sides by 3 )

n² = 49 ( take square root of both sides )


√(n^2) = ±
√(49) , that is

n = ± 7

if n = 7 then 3n = 3 × 7 = 21

the numbers are 7 and 21

if n = - 7 then 3n = 3 × - 7 = - 21

the numbers are - 7 and - 21
