Explanation:

5x + y = 28 → (1)

x - y = 2 → (2)

adding (1) and (2) term by term will eliminate y

(5x + x) + (y - y) = 28 + 2

6x + 0 = 30

6x = 30 ( divide both sides by 6 )

x = 5

substitute x = 5 into either of the 2 equations and solve for y

substituting into (1)

5(5) + y = 28

25 + y = 28 ( subtract 25 from both sides )

y = 3

solution is (5, 3 )
