Explanation:

Convert both numbers into mixed numbers.

Multiply 8 x 4 to get 32. You do this because the denominator of the other fraction is 1/4.

Then turn 7 1/4 into 29/4. You do this by multiplying 7 x 4 which is 28, then adding the number that is in the numerator which is 1 in this case. 28+1 is 29. This makes 29/4. Make sure to keep the same denominator.

Subtract 32/4 - 29/4 = 3/4.

Because the denominators are the same, they can be subtracted.
