In the Discussion Board, you and your classmates have the opportunity to share thoughts and ideas that will help you see “the big picture” of what you are learning. If you give this activity your all, it will be easier for you to see how concepts in this course connect to a variety of topics in the world and in your own life. The Discussion Board is a tool that will help you better grasp why the content you are learning matters. You can respond to the original question, and you can reply to others’ comments. Please refer to your teacher for more information on expectations for each post and for extra help. * * * * * Unit 4 introduced you to many people who played important roles in the American Civil War. Answer:

Abraham Lincoln was an important figure in the American Civil War because he was the president of the United States at the time and was ultimately responsible for the Union's victory in the war. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation which declared all slaves in the Confederacy to be free and he also gave the famous Gettysburg Address.

Jefferson Davis was an important figure in the American Civil War because he was the president of the Confederacy and the leader of the Confederate government during the war. He was responsible for managing the Confederate army and resources and ultimately led them to their defeat. He was seen as a hero to many Southerners and a villain to many Northerners.
