The principal’s recent proposal to separate math classes into fast and slow sections is intended to help the slow students, but instead will only hurt them. The principal feels that if the less adept students are put in a special section, they will be able to proceed at a slower pace, which will enable them to absorb their lessons more properly. On the contrary, these students will perceive themselves as slow and act accordingly, lowering their own standards as their teachers lower their expectations of them. Students who had struggled in class to avoid the label “slow” will stop struggling and thus learn that much more slowly.

A. “Slow” students do not need special attention in class.

B. Students’ perceptions of themselves affect their ability to learn. ✓

  • A student's perception of themselves can affect their entire academic life as they would set a frame of theirs onto their mind thinking that's what they made for, that's where they fit in , that's what they deserve and therefore, giving the same platform as others would give them an opportunity to grow in an environment which is normal where ,they are treated as an individual who is a seeker of knowledge and not a someone certain who lacks the ability to seek it.

C. Slow students can learn from bright ones in the same class.

D. Bright students are not as motivated by self-esteem as are less apt students.

E. Teachers generally expect too little from their slower students.
