QUESTION 1 SCENARIO The year 2020 saw the introduction of a coronavirus (COVID-19) to the world. Communities and school children were (and are still being) affected by the COVID-19 virus. School children did not attend school for a long period. Upon the re-opening of schools, all the school children were required to wear facial masks. Some of these children are in the Technology classes that you teach. As a teacher, your strategy is that each school child should be able to make a facial mask. This is possible since this activity is taught under one of the themes of the Technology curriculum, as PROCESSING. Answer the following questions and show how you will teach PROCESSING as a theme to develop a project for facial masks under COVID-19 conditions. a. Indicate the grade level of your learners. (1) b. Discuss the theoretical background to the project as you would explain it to your learners. (6) c. Identify step one of the technological process for the project . (1) d. Describe the project as a problem that must be solved. (5) e. Identify step two of the technological process for the project you have chosen. (2) f. Discuss three alternative solutions to the problem. (6)

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

a. The grade level of my learners is Grade 6.

b. The theoretical background of the project can be explained to the learners in the following way:

"Class, today we are going to dive into the theme of PROCESSING in our Technology class. Processing is all about transforming materials or ideas to create something new and useful. We have been living through a challenging time with the COVID-19 virus, and as you all know, it is important for everyone to wear facial masks to protect ourselves and others from getting sick. So, our project for today is to learn how to make our own facial masks using the skills and knowledge we have developed in our Technology class. By the end of this project, you will be able to not only make your own facial mask but also understand the importance of processing and problem-solving in real-life situations."

c. Step one of the technological process for the project is Research.

d. The problem that must be solved in this project is how to create a facial mask that is effective in protecting against the COVID-19 virus, comfortable to wear, and can be made using easily available materials. The challenge is to design a mask that meets these criteria and can be made by each student independently.

e. Step two of the technological process for the project is Design.

f. Three alternative solutions to the problem could be:

Sewn Fabric Mask: Students can learn how to sew a facial mask using fabric, elastic, and a sewing machine or needle and thread. This solution would allow for customization in design and fit.

No-Sew Paper Mask: Students can explore creating a facial mask using paper, scissors, and tape. This solution would be quick and easy for those who do not have access to sewing materials.

Plastic Bottle Mask: Students can investigate using recycled plastic bottles to create a facial mask. By cutting and shaping the bottle, they can form a mask that covers the nose and mouth. This solution would emphasize sustainability and the importance of recycling.

By considering these alternative solutions, the students will have the opportunity to choose the method that suits their skills, resources, and preferences best. This will promote creativity and problem-solving skills within the technological process.
