QUESTION 1 SCENARIO The year 2020 saw the introduction of a coronavirus (COVID-19) to the world. Communities and school children were (and are still being) affected by the COVID-19 virus. School children did not attend school for a long period. Upon the re-opening of schools, all the school children were required to wear facial masks. Some of these children are in the Technology classes that you teach. As a teacher, your strategy is that each school child should be able to make a facial mask. This is possible since this activity is taught under one of the themes of the Technology curriculum, as PROCESSING. Answer the following questions and show how you will teach PROCESSING as a theme to develop a project for facial masks under COVID-19 conditions. a. Indicate the grade level of your learners. (1) b. Discuss the theoretical background to the project as you would explain it to your learners. (6) c. Identify step one of the technological process for the project . (1) d. Describe the project as a problem that must be solved. (5) e. Identify step two of the technological process for the project you have chosen. (2) f. Discuss three alternative solutions to the problem. (6)

Answer:

a. The grade level of the learners is not specified in the scenario, so we will assume they are middle school or high school students.

b. The theoretical background to the project could be explained to the learners by discussing the importance of wearing facial masks in preventing the spread of COVID-19. The teacher can explain how respiratory droplets are the main mode of transmission for the virus and wearing a mask can help reduce the risk of transmission. The teacher can also discuss the different types of masks available, such as surgical masks, cloth masks, and N95 masks, and their effectiveness in protecting against the virus.

c. Step one of the technological process for the project is to identify the problem or need. In this case, the problem is that school children need to wear facial masks for their safety and to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

d. The project can be described to the learners as a problem that needs to be solved by designing and making their own facial masks. They need to create masks that are comfortable, fit well, and provide adequate protection against the virus. This problem requires them to consider factors such as materials, design, and functionality.

e. Step two of the technological process for the project is to generate and develop ideas. In this step, students can research and brainstorm different ideas and designs for their facial masks. They can consider factors such as the type of materials they will use, the style and shape of the mask, and any additional features they may want to incorporate, such as adjustable straps or a filter pocket.

f. Three alternative solutions to the problem could be:

1. Designing and making a cloth mask using fabric and elastic bands. This is a simple and cost-effective solution that allows for customization in terms of fabric patterns and colors. It can provide basic protection and can be easily washed and reused.

2. Creating a 3D-printed mask with a filter. This solution requires access to a 3D printer and the necessary materials. The advantage of this solution is that it can provide a more secure fit and better filtration capabilities. However, it may be more complex to design and produce compared to a cloth mask.

3. Making a mask using a combination of materials, such as a fabric mask with a transparent plastic shield. This solution allows for better communication by keeping the mouth visible while still providing protection. It can be a good option especially for individuals who rely on lip-reading or facial expressions for communication.

The teacher can discuss these alternative solutions with the learners, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each one. Students can also be encouraged to come up with their own unique ideas and solutions.
