8. At a winery 15 people are hired to pick grapes. They pick 15 tons of grapes, which yield 1200 to 1300 gallons of wine ( 1 ton = 2000 pounds). What is the yield percent for grapes to produce wine? ( Use 1250 gallons in calculations)

Answer:

290.4 %

Explanation:

Since 15 tons of grapes are picked and 1 ton = 2000 pounds, then 15 tons = 15 × 1 ton = 15 × 2000 lb = 30000 lb which is the mass of the grapes.

Since 1200 to 1300 gallons of wine are produced and we are to use 1250 gallons in calculations, since the density of wine, ρ = 8.262 lb/gallon, and ρ = mass of wine, m'/volume of wine, v = m/v

ρ = m/v

So, making m subject of the formula, we have

m = ρv

substituting the values of the variables into the equation, we have

m = 8.262 lb/gal × 1250 gal = 10327.5 lb

So, the yield percent for grapes to produce wine = mass of grapes/mass of wine × 100 %

= 30000 lb/10327.5 lb × 100 %

= 2.904 × 100 %

= 290.4 %

So, the yield percent for grapes to produce wine is 290.4 %
