Answer:

(17, - 5 )

Explanation:

- 5x - 5y = - 60 → (1)

- 2x + y = - 39 → (2)

multiplying (2) by 5 and adding to (1) will eliminate y

- 10x + 5y = - 195 → (3)

add (1) and (3) term by term to eliminate y

(- 5x - 10x) + (- 5y + 5y) = - 60 - 195

- 15x + 0 = - 255

- 15x = - 255 ( divide both sides by - 15 )

x = 17

substitute x = 17 into either of the 2 original equations and solve for y

substituting into (2)

- 2(17) + y = - 39

- 34 + y = - 39 ( add 34 to both sides )

y = - 5

solution is (17, - 5 )
