Answer:

daughter is 12 and father is 40

Explanation:

let x represent the daughter's age, then father is x + 28

In 2 years time their ages will be

daughter : x + 2 and father : x + 28 + 2 = x + 30

At this time the father is 3 times as old as the daughter , that is

x + 30 = 3(x + 2)

x + 30 = 3x + 6 ( subtract x from both sides )

30 = 2x + 6 ( subtract 6 from both sides )

24 = 2x ( divide both sides by 2 )

12 = x and x + 28 = 12 + 28 = 40

Their present ages are

daughter is 12 and father is 40
