The answer is: so many were killed or wounded.

The term "Lost Generation" is primarily associated with the idea that many young men who fought in World War I experienced significant loss of life, physical injuries, and emotional scars that had a profound impact on their generation. This term was popularized by writer Gertrude Stein and further elaborated by author Ernest Hemingway in his novel "The Sun Also Rises."

I hope this helped!
