The tension in the wire immediately after the collision is calculated by applying the following formula as follows;

T = mv²/r

where;

  • m is the total mass of the orament and missile
  • v is the final speed of the system
  • r is the radius of the circular path

The final speed of the system is calculated by applying principle of conservation of linear momentum as follows;

0.8 kg x (0 m/s) + 0.4 kg x (12 m/s) = v (0.8 kg + 0.4 kg)

0 + 4.8 = 1.2v

v = 4.8 / 1.2

v = 4 m/s

The tension in the wire is;

T = mv²/r

T = (0.8 kg + 0.4 kg) x (4 m/s )² / 1.5 m

T = 12.8 N
