Explanation:

Simply remember how a number line is like and this will be easy.

Negative numbers starting from negative 1 go <-- from zero

Positive numbers starting from positive 1 go -> from zero

As for knowing which is greater:

Well, if I owe you 1 dollar (-1) and your friend owes you 3 dollars (-3), He owes you more, and I owe you less.

Therefore, how much I owe you, which is "-1" is the greater number.

Because in a way, I have more money than your friend. He has more to pay you, when I simply owe you one dollar.

The trick is to remember negative numbers as if you are taking a loan.
