A tennis player tosses a tennis ball straight up and then catches it after 1.66 s at the same height as the point of release.

(a) What is the acceleration of the ball while it is in flight?
magnitude (?) m/s ²
direction (?) ---Select--- upward, downward , or The magnitude is zero.
(b) What is the velocity of the ball when it reaches its maximum height?
magnitude (?) m/s ²
direction (?)---Select--- upward, downward, or The magnitude is zero.
(c) Find the initial velocity of the ball
(?)m/s upward
(d) Find the maximum height it reaches.
(?) m

Answer:

a) acceleration of ball in flight = -9.80 m/s^2

b) velocity of ball at max height = zero ball is stationary

c) t = 1.66 / 2 = .83 time of ball to decelerate

v = a t = 9.80 m/s^2 * .83 s = 8.13 m/s

d) H = 1/2 g t^2 = 1/2 * 9.8 m/s^2 * (.83 s)^2 = 3.38 m

if ball falls for .83 sec it wil travel 3.38 m back to its original position
