Sarah drove 3 hours more than Michael on their trip to Texas. If the trip took 37 hours, how long did Sarah and Michael each drive.

Sarah = 20, Michael = 17

Explanation:

1. Give each person a value.

Sarah = 3+m

Michael = m

2. Solve the equation!

37 = 3+m+m

37 = 3+2m

Subtract 3 on both sides

34 = 2m

Divide by 2 on both sides

17 = the amount of hours michael drove (or m)

Amount of hours Sarah drove = 17 + 3 = 20
