algebraic expressions that are written with variables and exponents are called polynomial expressions for example,

x² + 2x - 2

(2a - b)²

5x² + 2y - 7

etc etc

the expressions with negative exponents and the expressions which have a variable in their denominator are non polynomial expressions. for example,

x⁻² + 5

2 / (x+3)
