I think it is a misconception to believe that majoring in physics forces you into physics research. Instead, I consider physics a solid “gateway major.”

The study of physics teaches you to identify, simplify, and solve problems in a systematic way. Physics also teaches you how to design a valid experiment, or “test,” for a claim. All sciences do that, and physics is very rigorous in this regard.

Physics focuses early on understanding what information you need to solve a problem. In the real world, this skill can translate to gap analysis for all kinds of information.

These days, learning physics also means learning supporting skills, such as math and computer programming.

Fortunately, your problem solving skills also transfer to almost any problem in any discipline I have encountered. I have been able to go through several career transitions, and attribute this ability to learn new skills and adapt to my physics training.

As a bonus, you get to learn how we model the reality around us, and the strengths and limitations of these models. Then, reading science and technology news becomes interesting, and you can spot stories or ads that don’t make any sense. So, you can be informed more easily about current technology trends.

Of course, you may also decide that you love physics. Some days I wish I finished my PhD and continued with research or applications in the private sector.
