Explanation:

Line y = 3x +2 you should recognize, is in form y = mx + b.

where 'm' is the slope = 3

now you should have been told, and you have to remember ( i.e. - learn) that the PERPENDICULAR slope to this is - 1/m

for this case, that would be - 1/3

so your new line begins to look like this: y = - 1/3 x + b

Now, substitute in the point 3,5 so you can compute the value of 'b'

5 = -1/3 (3 ) + b shows b = 6

your new line is then y = -1/3 x + 6

Answer: y = -1/3x + 6

Explanation:

First of all, a perpendicular line will have a slope that is the negative reciprocal of the original line. For example, in this case the slope of the line is 3, that means the slope that the perpendicular line will have will be -1/3. Another example of this is let's say the slope of the line was 2/3 the perpendicular line will have a slope of -3/2.

Now we know one component of the equation -> y = -1/3x + c

The next step is to substitute that values of x and y that we want the perpendicular line to pass through, in this case (3,5).

So, we get...

5 = -1/3*(3) + c

5 = -1 +c

c =6

this gives us the final equation of y = -1/3x + 6
