Subtracting fractions with unlike denominators is tricky. Because you'll have to basically make them like denominators. Like this:

$\cfrac{9}{16}-\cfrac{3}{8}$

Obviously, 16 and 8 are not the same. Well, unless we perform some operation that will turn 8 into 16, we won't be able to add them.

The best thing is to multiply 8 by 2:

$\cfrac{9}{16}-\cfrac{3\cdot2}{8\cdot2}$

$\cfrac{9}{16}-\cfrac{6}{16}$

We can now subtract.

$\cfrac{3}{16}$

Answer :

$\cfrac{3}{16}$
