V = amount of students in a van

B = amount of students in a bus

so for High School A, hmmm 9 vans means 9*V students total in all vans and 14 buses means 14*B students in all buses, and we know all added together is 818 students.

For High School B one van with students means 1*V students and 7 buses means 7*B students total in the buses, and we know all added together is 374 students.

\begin{cases} \stackrel{ \textit{High School A} }{9V~~ + ~~14B~~ = ~~818} \\\\\\ \stackrel{ \textit{High School B} }{V~~ + ~~7B~~ = ~~374} \end{cases} \\\\[-0.35em] ~\dotfill\\\\ \stackrel{\textit{using the 1st equation}}{V+7B=374\implies V=374-7B} \\\\\\ \stackrel{\textit{substituting on the 2nd equation}}{9(\underset{ V }{374-7B})~~ + ~~14B~~ = ~~818}\implies 3366-63B+14B=818

3366-49B=818\implies 3366=818+49B\implies 2548=49B \\\\\\ \cfrac{2548}{49}=B\implies \boxed{52=B}\hspace{15em}\stackrel{ 374~~ - ~~7(52) }{\boxed{V=10}}
