The stage at the local playhouse needs to be coated with a wood finish. The stage is a rectangle, with a trapezoid that extends out into the audience. If a can of wood will coat 70 sq ft, how many cans of wood finish will be needed to coat the stage?

Explanation:

area of stage = area of rectangle + area of trapezoid

area of stage = LW + (1/2)(B + b)h

area of stage = (30 ft × 15 ft) + (1/2)(30 ft + 20 ft)(10 ft)

area of stage = 450 ft² + 250 ft²

area of stage = 700 ft²

1 can of wood finish coats 70 ft².

number of cans = (total area of stage)/(number of ft² covered by 1 can)

number of cans = (700 ft²)/(70 ft²)

number of cans = 10

Answer: C) 10 cans
